Ecodesign Requirements for Computers & Refrigerators

The Eco-Design Requirements of Energy-related Products (previously known as Energy-using Products) Directive sets out a framework for the setting of requirements for energy-related products. An 'Energy-related Product’ is defined as any good that has an impact on energy consumption during use which is placed on the market and/or put into service, and includes parts intended to be incorporated into energy-related products covered by this Directive which are placed on the market and/or put into service as individual parts for end-users and of which the environmental performance can be assessed independently.

Two new Regulations for computers (and computer servers) and household refrigerating applicances are set to come into force in July; see below for further details:

• Regulation (EU) No. 617/2013 for ecodesign requirements for computers and computer servers will enter into force on 17^th July 2013. The Regulation also amends Regulation (EC) No. 1275/2008 for ‘Standby and Off Modes’ and Regulation (EC) No. 278/2009 for ‘External Power Supplies.’

•  The second tier of requirements under Regulation (EU) No. 643/2009 for ecodesign requirements for Household Refrigerating Applications came into force on the 1^st July 2013.
